Хуш омэдид — Welcome to Beit Kavkaz

Who We Are

Building Community,
Preserving Heritage

Led by Rabbi Ruvinov and Shirly, Beit Kavkaz is a growing force in Southeast Michigan — dedicated to celebrating the rich traditions of the Kavkazi (Mountain Jewish) people.

Our name — Beit Kavkaz, "House of the Caucasus" — reflects our mission: to create a welcoming home for anyone connected to Juhuri heritage, whether by birth, family, or curiosity. We gather to share language, food, music, history, and the enduring spirit of our ancestors.

Whether you grew up hearing Juhuri at the dinner table or are just discovering this vibrant culture, you belong here.

Our Story

Heritage Timeline

From the ancient Caucasus to Southeast Michigan — over a millennium of resilience

5th–6th Century

Settlement in Caucasus

Jewish communities establish roots in the mountainous regions of present-day Azerbaijan and Dagestan, creating a unique culture blending Persian and Jewish traditions.

1600s

"The Jewish Valley" Era

Mountain Jews flourish in settlements like Quba's "Red Town" — the only all-Jewish town outside Israel. The Juhuri language becomes the heartbeat of daily life.

1800s

Russian Empire Integration

Under Russian rule, Mountain Jews navigate new social structures while preserving their distinct identity, language, and religious practices.

1920s

Soviet Era Changes

Collectivization and secularization challenge traditions, yet Mountain Jews quietly preserve their faith and customs through family networks and oral tradition.

1970s–90s

Diaspora Begins

Waves of emigration carry Mountain Jews to Israel, the United States, and beyond. Communities form in new lands, carrying Juhuri language and traditions forward.

2020s

Beit Kavkaz Founded

In Southeast Michigan, Rabbi Ruvinov and Shirly establish Beit Kavkaz — a new home for preserving Juhuri heritage, connecting generations, and building future.
